Sanatana Dharma

The real name of Hinduism is Sanatana Dharma, the eternal order, the perennial law, the eternal path.

The word sanatana means eternal, perennial, primordial. Dharma (from the Sanskrit root “dhr” giving support, solid) means law, duty, righteousness, merit, or code of conduct.

Dharma is what sustains the universe. Being aware of the dharma in our life and living in harmony leads us to the highest good, liberation or moksha.

Sanatana Dharma is the oldest living spiritual tradition on earth. Its essence has been maintained to this day, welcoming at all times the authentic aspiration of the human being to recognize his transcendent Reality. At the root of Hinduism, there is a deep recognition of the sacredness of all forms, all names, actions and being; the sacredness of the universe, the earth, nature and above all the sacredness of our own essence.

“The world is a harmonious dance, there is a cosmic order in which everything happens at the right time and in the right place. I am part of everything and everything is part of me.”

Swami Satyananda Saraswati
